Authenticity vs. Professionalism: Do You Really Have to Choose?
What if you didn’t have to choose between being your true self and being taken seriously at work? Hi, I’m Tori, and I believe that authenticity isn’t something fixed, it's something that evolves as we grow. Every day, I’m uncovering new layers of what it means to show up authentically, and I’d love to share some of that journey with you.
What Does It Mean to Be Authentic?
Authenticity is about letting your inner spark guide how you show up, even when you’re not consciously thinking about it. This spark is unique to each of us: it’s the circuit board for how we grow, evolve, and connect with the world.
Chances are, the people you admire the most are the ones who show up fully as themselves. They have the courage to embrace their authenticity, and that’s what makes them stand out.
In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown introduces a perspective that resonates here: instead of asking how to be authentic, we should be asking why not be authentic? Because deep down, we already know how to be ourselves. The real question is, what’s stopping us?
The Problem With Traditional Professionalism
There’s this unspoken rule that we have to prove we’re professional. But once we slip up, it’s like there’s no coming back. It’s exhausting.
Sociologist Max Weber studied professionalism in the 1800s, defining it as a system of specialized knowledge, formal training, and ethical standards. But more importantly, he explored how professionals maintain credibility by conforming to social norms.
In essence, you're not made to fit into a mold or a rigid box. Yet, that’s often the expectation, conforming to a framework that stifles individuality and authenticity.
Authenticity Isn’t Unprofessional, It’s Your Biggest Advantage!
Let’s be real: most of us have toned ourselves down at work. We’ve masked our quirks, softened our voices, and conformed to expectations that don’t really fit who we are.
But what if true professionalism isn’t about polishing ourselves into something unrecognizable, but about showing up as our authentic selves with confidence, strength, and unapologetic integrity?
Because authenticity isn’t a liability, it’s an asset. It’s what makes you:
Magnetic in your leadership.
Trustworthy in your relationships.
Confident in your expertise. (Bye bye, Imposter Syndrome!)
If you’ve ever felt like you’re stuck in The Devil Wears Prada, burning yourself out just to be taken seriously, it’s time to rethink what professionalism really means to you.
How to Redefine Professionalism Without Losing Yourself
The real challenge isn’t choosing between authenticity and professionalism, it’s redefining professionalism in a way that allows authenticity to shine. What if professionalism wasn’t about fitting into a mold, but about showing up as your best, most grounded self?
Here’s how you can start integrating authenticity into your work without sacrificing your credibility:
1. Own Your Expertise, Your Way
Professionalism isn’t about perfection; it’s about bringing your value. The way you deliver that value is what sets you apart.
Instead of conforming to rigid norms, find ways to infuse your personality into your work.
Use your natural voice in emails, meetings, and presentations. You can be polished and real. It never hurt anybody to use the occasional “y’all” or exclamation point.
Enjoy the trials of infusing yourself more into your work by being your own support. Growing into yourself is tough, especially if you’re used to beating yourself up for not meeting expectations of yourself or others.
2. Set Boundaries That Honor Who You Are
Start by practicing saying no to overworking, without guilt.
Overwork often stems from the belief that we need to prove our worth to others. But honoring your boundaries protects your energy and creativity.
For example, if you’ve been staying late to complete tasks that aren't urgent or necessary, challenge yourself to leave on time and trust that your best work doesn’t need to come at the cost of your well-being.
3. Challenge Outdated Workplace Norms
You don’t have to accept outdated workplace norms as gospel.
Whether it’s challenging an inefficient process, advocating for better mental health resources, or simply creating space for more human connection, change often starts with you.
By leading with authenticity, you’re setting an example for others to follow.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and advocate for what will help you and those around you flourish.
4. Trust That You Belong Exactly As You Are
The biggest shift comes from within.
If you’re constantly questioning whether your authentic self is “professional enough,” ask yourself:
Would I respect someone more if they were polished but robotic or real and engaging?
What is getting in the way of me being myself right now?
What am I afraid of right now that is limiting me from being my true self?
Embracing your authentic self isn’t always easy, but it’s the key to unlocking true growth and connection.
So, Where Do We Go From Here?
It’s time to stop believing that authenticity and professionalism are mutually exclusive. By redefining professionalism to make room for your authentic self, you can be both successful and true to who you are.
